Todays music

Post by HARDKORE »

Can you call it art anymore. I listed to something today. It was like my hoe my bi@#$ my B@#$# my hoe. It said that over and over again. How in the world is that music. I should go next door, record noises for the trailor park and sale them for a ton of cash. They are more entertaining.

rock is sounding really produced now too. Even the "indy" stuff is all a bunch of sell-out crap now. Go find a metal cd. Or the blues.

The stuff I usually listen to is a series of related artists or artists who have played with other artists. All of whom are generally very difficult to put in a genre. Word of mouth artists are usually the best.
Actually one of the best ways I have found new music lately is through some movies (such as Garden State) or TV shows (House MD or Scrubs...). The latter of which I think has become a fantastic forum for little known artists to get their stuff heard, especially when they aren't designed to be the commercial success that so many are.

Also, I should mention that I heard the most fantastic techno-ish song on our local alternative station's "live to air". It was full of social commentary and a real zeitgeist. The lyrics went as such:
F@#$ that s@#$, n@#$%, f@#$ that s@#$!
F@#$ that s@#$, n@#$%, f@#$ that s@#$!
F@#$ that s@#$
F@#$ that s@#$
F@#$ that s@#$, n@#$%, f@#$ that s@#$!
And it continued like that for at least 5 minutes, occasionally stopping for a verse or instrumental portion.
And it wasn't censored, which makes me think that the station probably will receive some sort of punishment.

I have to admit I don't listen to most of the newer music all that often.
I listen to a station that plays predominantly old rock with some of the newer rock songs.

You best be respecting lest I get to stepping.

Just take those old records off the shelf
Ill sit and listen to em by myself
Todays music aln t got the same soul
I like that old time rock n roll
Dont try to take me to a disco
Youll never even get me out on the
In ten minutes Ill be late for the door
I like that old time rockn roll

Still like that old time rockn roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock n roll
Wont go to hear them play a tango
Id rather hear some blues or funky old soul
Theres only sure way to get me to go
Start playing old time rock n roll
Call me a relic, call me what you will
Say Im old-fashioned, say Im over the hill
Today music aint got the same soul
I like that old time rock n roll

Still like that old time rockn roll
That kind of music just soothes the soul
I reminisce about the days of old
With that old time rock n roll
Just like an std, will never fully go away.

Try listening to different genres of music. New Rave is good as a representation of today's music if you don't want to feel depressed. I really think that Klaxons are genius.

Rap has so much potential. A completely freestyle art form? No wonder it has such appeal. I'll often make my lyrics in the form of rap, even though I hate the art form.

Rap was really founded more in Metal originally, where the guitar was too heavy to really establish a rhyme otherwise. Then came songs like Momma said knock ya out.

I've written about how there are essentially 2 fields of musical expression, which divide into 2 other sections. If you do not fall into one of these categories, I feel you are not a valid musician. Also, the easier it is to deviate from this pattern, the less musical the music is, and more of an alternative form of expresssion it happens to be.

Correction: rap HAD potential. Then they ruined it.

Basically, there is the Lyrical and Audible aspects to music. Then there is the composure and performance. Four areas total.

The composure of the audible end is the ability to write music. This involves a knowledge of what sounds good in music.
The performance of the audible end is the ability to make nice sounds.

The performance of lyrics is a person being able to sing.
The composure of the lyrics is writing a song with a meaning.

Be able to play music, write music, sing lyrics, or write lyrics, and you are a musician. Some are more glorified than others. A person that only writes songs might be looked down upon, but should be included. The worlds are heavily emphasized in the success of a song.

What rap does is take this all away. A rapper can have others make the words, on the computer someone else can do the sounds and program it, and the vocal performance is simply speaking in a rhythmic way, so much that it's what is said that appeals more then how a person can see it. Not to attack all rappers, but it stinks that we can't seem to get anyone that does something themselves.

And of the four, this one is meaningless: The composure of the lyrics is writing a song with a meaning.

Screw all you folk-music kids and your "lyrics". What the frontman says is irrelevant, all that matters is his/her voice as an instrument.

PS, there is LOTS of good metal being produced these days. It's like a second coming really.

music died horribly in the 80's, everything since then has been its death rattle

Metal WAS good, but with most bands if you've heard one song, you've heard them all (actually that applies to the entire genre nowadays, not just the bands)
Rap could be good, but isn't. Hip Hop/RnB ditto. Techno is utter tosh. Rock has lost its edge completely.

Bring back the 60's and 70's (cried the 19 year old)
