Re: Melbourne
Yep I live in Melbourne! I can give recommendations for good and cheap restaurants, areas to go to, how to navigate our Kafka-esque smartcard system for public transport, and activities maybe.
I won't be actually around until after Feb 23rd, as I am currently in Vietnam but if you are there after that Astro I might be available for amateur tour guide duties for a few hours.

Re: Melbourne
I'd personally recommend just walking around the city centre there, which is easy to do as they have a very simple grid layout for all the streets and are quite pedestrian friendly. Flinders Street Station and Federation Square looked pretty beautiful to me, though how they compare to similar sights in Europe I don't know, though. Walking through the little alleyways and exploring all the cafes and stores is also quite an experience.

Agreed. Also, trams within the city circle are now free so it's quite easy to get around within the CBD. The botanic gardens are really nice, and there is a museum near Federation square (The Ian Potter Centre) that has free admission to a lot of exhibits including some classic works by important Australian artists such as Sydney Nolan and Arthur Boyd.Sahan wrote:I'd personally recommend just walking around the city centre there, which is easy to do as they have a very simple grid layout for all the streets and are quite pedestrian friendly. Victoria market is pretty cool as well, and the food area has some pretty great bratwurst and böreks.
Plus, you can't visit Melbourne without trying a proper Melbourne coffee, as we aren't the coffee capital of the world for nothing. A good place in the city is 1000 pound bend, which also has some pretty great food (extra cheap on Tuesdays) including a kangaroo burger and a saganaki burger.

Just don't say that aloud within the city borders.Astrogirl wrote:Unfortunately I don't drink coffee.
If you drink dandelion lattes I do know a place that does a great one, as well as amazing vegetarian food.

Re: Melbourne
I have never heard of dandelion lattes. It appears to be a kind of coffee with soy milk?

Re: Melbourne
Well, it's a non-coffee coffee, if that makes sense. Dandelion is often used as a coffee substitute, in that you can make a similar-ish tasting beverage with no caffeine whatsoever.
I'm not too fussed about the caffeine (I have about one coffee a week on average) but the dandelion lattes at Vegie bar are delicious so I always get one when I go there. You can get them with either soy or dairy milk.

My departure date has been moved from the 14th to the 21st of February and might be moved further ... this seems to be a messy customer already.

Cool, I will be around (although juggling work and uni) so you can pm me if you want some recommendations for stuff or a guide if I am free on a particular day.
