Well it's been awhile since I read Philip Pullman's stories, but I do remember them being really good. Not the next Shakespeare or anything, but good.

The first one didn't really try to beat you over the head with the Religion is Bad message like the other two did.
It introduced a novel setting and a bunch of compelling characters.
Then they all got killed off in the second book to make room for the preaching.

Police said they spent some time working out if they could charge the man with being armed with a weapon, as technically he was armed with part of a fish.

I think that's actually my main dislike, the drastic change from one novel to the next. And BAM a new world to add to it. AND our 'real' world as well. Way to ruin my escapism.
